transmission wont go out of first gear

I was on the trail with my 89 Cherokee when the trans cooler line pooped off i repaired it and added more trans fluid but my transmission now wont go out of first gear unless i get my rpms up to about 5500. Did i blow my trans pr is there something else wrong? Any ideas

How long did you drive it with the cooler line gone? Your trans can stand some abuse, but if you been driving it without th ATF for long...who knows.

For now: Make sure you have the correct ATF and to the correct level and color nd Testing: Try shifting manually. Does that give any issues or does it shift fine?

Dexron/Mercon III fluid is the recommended ATF for the AW4. Make sure u use it exclusively.

Might wanna test the TPS.. It maybe coincidence it went bad.

OP not that it's really going to help you but I did the same thing.

Tranny line blew at the radiator and about half way home from work the thing just stopped moving. RPMs went real high but the tranny didnt engage.

Reconnected the cooler line, added fluid, and it's been working fine since.

Did you rev it to try to get it to move a bunch?
