Drain and refill with the correct fluid.

Flush and refill with correct fluid.

If it's an AW4 trans Dextron is the correct fluid. Do the above recommendations.

DexronIII/Mercron.
Do multiple drain and refills to get all of the fluid swapped out of the torque converter.

OK so let's back up. Why do you think it's the wrong fluid? Do you have a 4.0 or a 2.5 liter engine?

telly98xj Aug 25, 2020 11:50 AM

its a 4.0

lawsoncl Aug 25, 2020 12:51 PM

The correct fluid is Dexron per the manufacturer of the trans (not chrysler) Chrysler claims ATF4+ is fine and many people have run it with no issues, but the consensus is that your should stick to DexIII. Check that the cable from the throttle body to the transmission is adjusted correctly. Is it filled properly per the dipstick?

telly98xj Aug 25, 2020 01:10 PM

it is to level
i will check the cable though thanx

Also, when you say slipping, is it maybe trying to start in 4th gear instead of 1st. Does it take-off normally if you put the shifter in (1-2). That's a different issue.

Here's a how-to video on checking the cable.

telly98xj Aug 25, 2020 01:44 PM

car runs fine it slips when i am at higher speeds rpm goes hi and transmission catches and releases

telly98xj Aug 25, 2020 01:46 PM

around 45 mph it starts acting up between 3rd and 4th

lawsoncl Aug 25, 2020 01:49 PM

It's jumping a few hundred rpm, like the torque converter is unlocking and locking? Driving along, can you cause the same effect if you lightly tap the brake with your left foot? If that's the case, the suspects are the switch at the brake pedal, throttle positiion sensor, and possibly the torque converter lockup solenoid in the trans.
