Transmission noise

Hey guys, I have a 2000 Jeep cherokee automatic transmission, ~36,000 on the motor and 151,000 on the body (transmission included).

Recently I've can induce a noise whenever I stick the car in reverse and give it gas abruptly. It makes a grinding noise, it doesnt do it if I ease on the reverse and incrementally increase the speed. Only if I abruptly give it gas, seems like the truck gets caught off guard. Even with the noise though the truck moves and the noise stops after the initial gas depression.

I was thinking of adding some transmission fluid or maybe draining and refilling. Any advice on what I should use or do? just add more to it?

What is the 'best' transmission fluid to use?

Thanks

Have you checked the level yet before thinking about adding?

Dex/Merc or Dex III is the ATF recommended

Your first priority is to check the level. make sure that it is at normal operating temp when you check the fluid level and idling in neutral. If you look at the dipstick it will tell you what level it should be at. I'm guessing that this is your first vehicle since you don't know how to add trans fluid? If so don't worry about it you will get some pretty good help here. We all had to start somewhere. Check the fluid level before you do any other things unless you need to add more. Then let us know what you find. BTW, When you check the level make sure that the fluid is bright red and not bfrown or nasty looking. Also smell it to see if it smells like it's burnt.

My transmission fluid is as brown as used oil. Also the fluid level is OK.

Should I purchase a wix filter and some dex/merc fluid and have it flushed and replaced? Will that cause issues?

Don't worry about the filter just yet. The best way to change the fluid is to do the drain and fill. Get several bottles of trans fluid. You should have a drain plug on the trans pan. Drain it from there. You will only get around 3 quarts out. Then refill it to the correct level. Drive it for a week or so. Then drain it again and refill. Keep doing this until the fluid it back to bright red. On the last drain then if you want you can change the screen (It's not a filter). It is not recommend to do a flush because it can cause a lot more problems. What ever you do make sure that you only use Dex/Merc or Dex III is the ATF. Do Not use the dex4.
BTW, Having the fluid like that can be caused from neglect, never being serviced or it was overheated.

I read that drain/fill method causes slips. I'm a little bit hesitant...:icon_cry:

Nope! The pressure flush is what causes the problem not the drain and fill. Also while you are at it you should adjust the tv cable. I don't have the write up on how to do it but it you do a search on here you should be able to find that write up.

Right next to TB beside the throttle cable in the bracket. Push in tab slide adjust back into housing. Push gas pedal to floor.

GooseJeep 08-04-2014 09:05 PM

is this the correct way to adjust the tv cable?

Or this one?

RTorrez1 08-05-2014 09:15 AM

Correct! The second video is what you want.
