Transmission noise
Hey guys, I have a 2000 Jeep cherokee automatic transmission, ~36,000 on the motor and 151,000 on the body (transmission included).
Recently I've can induce a noise whenever I stick the car in reverse and give it gas abruptly. It makes a grinding noise, it doesnt do it if I ease on the reverse and incrementally increase the speed. Only if I abruptly give it gas, seems like the truck gets caught off guard. Even with the noise though the truck moves and the noise stops after the initial gas depression. I was thinking of adding some transmission fluid or maybe draining and refilling. Any advice on what I should use or do? just add more to it? What is the 'best' transmission fluid to use? Thanks |
Have you checked the level yet before thinking about adding?
Dex/Merc or Dex III is the ATF recommended |
No im going to, is it the same process as a differential? Fill till it spills?

Your first priority is to check the level. make sure that it is at normal operating temp when you check the fluid level and idling in neutral. If you look at the dipstick it will tell you what level it should be at. I'm guessing that this is your first vehicle since you don't know how to add trans fluid? If so don't worry about it you will get some pretty good help here. We all had to start somewhere. Check the fluid level before you do any other things unless you need to add more. Then let us know what you find. BTW, When you check the level make sure that the fluid is bright red and not bfrown or nasty looking. Also smell it to see if it smells like it's burnt.
P.s First jeep haha. |
My transmission fluid is as brown as used oil. Also the fluid level is OK.
Should I purchase a wix filter and some dex/merc fluid and have it flushed and replaced? Will that cause issues? |

I read that drain/fill method causes slips. I'm a little bit hesitant...:icon_cry:
