So if i can lift my transfercase/tranny off of my cross member like 1/4 inch, does it mean i need a new mount, or is it usually have that much play (in search of an annoying clunk.)

You can check the rubber on the trany mount for tears. My mount was torn all the way across the back end. I replaced it but there was no difference between the bad one and the new one.

If you have an annoying clunk coming from underneath, check all u-joints. Takes fifteen minutes. Also, try banging on things with your fist. I've found a couple of loose things this way.
