I am thinking of installing an inline Magnefine filter too
my xj has 96k, bought it 4 years ago with 81K
No, the majority of XJs have only the heat exchanger inside the radiator to cool the trans. If you put in an aux cooler, make sure you put it inline with the return line so you keep the factory heat exchanger. Just cut the rubber return line (it's the top one coming out of the radiator) and splice in the cooler lines with some barbed couplers.

This is just as much fun as it sounds.
His trans has a plug.

I plan on doing this a few more times with a couple hundred miles in between fresh ups.

Yeah, i've got the tranny pan drain plug. That was plan B if this extractor didn't work out.

Crawling under my Jeep these days is a major PITA because of health conditions namely a bad back.
Every time i crawl under the Jeep like for changing the engine oil or greasing the zerk fittings i pay for it a few days after.

This'll be one less time. Besides its so dam simple, mess free and quick with the extractor.
Only needed a handful of oil dry for the few drops that fell to the floor from pulling the tubes out. Next time, no drops. lol

Might even do the engine oil this way...Naah!

Sorry about your health problems.

In this case the end result will be much better to use a service that can perform the operation properly.

Removing the drain plug will dump much more old contaminated fluid than can ever be extracted w/ the pump. Dropping the pan afterwards will remove even more contaminated fluid.

Having a company perform those operations will provide a better end result.

No feeling sorry for my health problems. My back is fine 99% of the time.
It only acts up when doing certain contortion type of activities like:
-Crawling under my Jeep and wriggling around with tools
-Working on a ladder like painting
-working on low things like my Dodge Neon when i had to replace the cam sensor

I ain't gonna pay someone $60+ to either extract, remove the pan or drain the fluid out of the drain plug.
My fluid extractor cost about that much and it'll pay for itself after a few fluid refreshes.
I also plan to use it draining oil from my garden tractor's engine which is always a friggen mess.

Been around long enough to know the right way and the wrong way of doing things and what'll work in between like the fluid extractor in this case.

If there's any built up sediment or metal particles in the pan bottom or filter its been there for 17 years and 334,000 miles and hasn't hurt a thing.
Best to leave 'old' sleeping giants sleep!

I disagree. He said the extractor pulled just under 3qt. out, which is exactly what you get if you drain the pan.

Thanks for the update Moparado.

Cutting, pumping it out and filling it removes the most.

Dont mean to hijack this thread but would a trans cooler make the engine run cooler since it doesnt have the transmission heat to deal with?

It depends. If, as others have noted above, all your cooling system components are working properly, it won't decrease your coolant temps since the thermostat will compensate. However, an aux transmission cooler will decrease the amount of heat the trans will dump into the radiator via the factory heat exchanger, particularly if you're running it hard. If you're having problems with your thermostat or other cooling system components, you may see slight decreases in coolant temps with an aux trans cooler.
