Default Transmission drain and refill

How many quarts of fulid are required with a simple transmission drain and refill. 1999, 4.0 with auto trans. What is the correct procedure to check the fulid level after refilling?

should be between 3 and 4 quarts. Easiest way is to drain into an empty oil container and then pour that into something you can measure. I usually have a few empty quart containers around. Measuring procedure is to get it up to operating temperature and then check the level while idling. You can get a quick look prior to it coming up to temperature to see where you are on the dipstick. Make sure you give it some time to drain all the way down the fill tube. The difference between the bottom line and top line on the dipstick should be about a quart.
Keep in mind the entire system holds about 8 quarts. I have been using the Valvoline MaxLine dex/merc fluid and usually do a drain/refill and then do it again in a few weeks to get more of the old fluid out. if you change it regularly, you should be good with just a single drain and fill.

Like dzywicki said. Between 3 and 4 quarts. Get her nice and hot, check on level ground in neutral. Since there is a drain plug, wish all tranny pans had one, I dump my fluid every 2 years just cause it is so easy.
