Default Transmission Crossmember alignment off?

1995, 2 wheel drive, auto.

A while ago I installed a new transmission mount and when I went to reinstall the crossmember it was a bear getting back on, I had to drill new holes in it and pry it over to get the bolts to line up with the holes in the crossmember, It was a mess.... anyway.....

What would account for that? Its almost like the transmission and engine are too far forward ?

When I drive it, I dont feel or notice anything unusual from the drivetrain, except a little clunk but I think thats coming from the rear driveshaft u joint.
Oh, forgot to mention... I replace one of the engine mounts at the same time and it was not very difficult to install, didnt notice anything unusual. The other engine mount looks to have already been replace.

THANKS.

Maybe check the other engine mount. My left and tranny mount, being bad let the engine move forward a bit.

Did you try to put the cross member in both ways? I think it fits better one way, i could be wrong though. Definitely check the motor mounts.

Yea, I tried both ways and its the same. It is the crossmember that came with the car, Has part numbers that match my year.

There are two different mounts, must be a mix-up somewhere.

Did you compare the old mount to the new one? The mounts are different for the later year XJs. Those had a different crossmember, and the mount itself is offset so that the bolts are in a different place. That was done to accommodate a change to the exhaust.

If you somehow ended up with a 2001 mount, the holes wouldn't line up, and it would create the exact problem you describe.

ETA: Steve beat me to it. With pictures even!

OOhhhh.....

When I took it off I dont remember anything binding or bound up, I did do a quick comparison but the old one was really bent to hell and I didnt really understand why because this is not four wheel drive or used off road by the previous owner.
I have to check into the part number of the mount I installed and see if I still have the old one for a more thourough comparison.

Thanks everyone.

The one I installed looks more like the first/old one in the pic.

Acually, the bottom of the first one looks the same but the sides looked very different, could be just differnt manufacturing design.

I found the label from the box and it says ANCHOR 2625.
everywhere I check it says that this is the correct part number for my year although I am wondering if the box had the wrong mount it it.

I have been unable to find the old mount, I may have chucked it.

So, Is there any way to find out if I have the wrong mount while it is

installed?
