I keep my 91 XJ with the 4.0 HO motor and AW4 auto. in Power mode all the time while on the road. Not sure if it is the high miles or what but the tranny feels like it is jello inside if I put it in Comfort mode. It could be personal preference but, I like to feel the motor get into the power band and to feel it shift. In Comfort mode it never does before it's in high gear and appears to lug the motor down. The only time I put it in Comfort is while 4wheeling and in 4LO. If you put it in drive while in 4LO and have it in power that darn torque monster 4.0 tries to snap my neck...LOL.

Thanks for this
ha. re-installing? did you bypass it? or decide to just leave it be?
mine is NOT an opinion. it is my experience based on 3 jeeps. one 1987 comanche 4.0 auto, 4.10 gears 33" tires putting it to stock ratio, with the speedometer tuned PERFECTLY. I got 14 to 15mpg city in comfort, 17 to 19mpg in power. highway I got 17mpg comfort, 21-22mpg power.
1988 cherokee pioneer 4.0 auto 2dr 225's 3.55 gears, I got 15mpg solid city in comfort, 17-18mpg city power. highway 17-18mpg comfort, solid 22mpg power.
1988 comanche 4.0 auto 3.75's 31" tires proper speedo gear, I got 12 to 14mpg city comfort, 16mpg city power. 15mpg highway comfort, 18mpg highway power.
This truck no longer belongs to me. I sold it to my friend zach and he is regularly getting worse mpg, but he drives it hard.
I take mpg readings when i haven't beaten on the jeeps. these are tanks that I drive to gauge mpg.
power makes the engine work less to get to speed. if you are light on the pedal, and accelerate slowly, you will net the most gain by using power. I cannot stress this enough.

So, for all intents and purposes, for DD, leave it in power mode? BTW, I'm running 235/75/15's, no lift, and stock drivetrain.
Also, power mode gets better MPG?

notice what rpm and speed your jeep shifts into high gear when getting on the interstate in comfort mode....then get in comfort slow let off gas like when going up a hill flip the switch to power and the trans should down shift and rpms will jump up and trans will shift at a higher speed and higher rpm back into high gear this will tell you if its working properly hope this helps

Help
Can you post a pic here or a sketch of how to link those wires with a connector..and what colored wires should be linked?? Thanks
H.O.'s are permanently wired in the power mode.
power doesn't really give you much more, but as you've noted, it's a SIGNIFICANT economy gain in the power setting.
use power all the time. if you want to use the switch space, get in there and make a small jumper wire, and hardwire it all the time through that connector. use the switch for something else.

I have a 91xj with a power/comfort switch..as ive been reading in forums they bypass the switch by linking the blue wire to the tan wire leaving the black one free... is that safe and correct to do?? Many say its a bad switch issue thats y they bypass... lately i noticed that the tranny shifts automaticaly to 4th gear and the engine loses power..ON POWER MODE..so i guess its a switch issue.

Bypassing the Power/Comfort Switch on a Renix Jeep
Remove and unplug the switch. In the harness are 3 wires One has a stripe, one is tan, and the other black. Make a 4" jumper wire with a male spade at each end. Plug one end in the cavity for the tan wire and the other in the cavity for the striped wire and you'll be in permanent Power mode. Stuff the harness back in and reinstall the switch for looks.
If you happen to have a 91 or 92 XJ/MJ and it has the Power/Comfort switch, just jumper the Tan and Blue wires in the harness plug.
NEVER include the black wire when jumpering!!!

One post said as far as he knows only the remix has the switch and another post said the ho is permanently wired for power mode. Unless someone added the high output badge on mine or mine is just a rare odd duck Hodge podge from the factory ho did come with the switch at least one year.

And, the switch carried over into 1991. That should be clear in the link. Nothing special. Nothing rare. No odd duck.
Just bypass it using the Tip at cruiser54.com.
