Transfercase input leak

Hey guys! So I have a mystery leak from my NP242 in my 89 XJ with a AW4 trans.

I found out my case was out of fluid when I heard my chain grinding a little. So i changed the chain and refilled the case (with the T-Case still installed). After a couple of weeks the case was empty again with no obvious sign of leaking fluid.

I was pretty confident that the case halves and output shafts were not the culprit so I deduced it was the input shaft seal. When I took the T-case out of the jeep I noticed only three of the six bolts were tight (and 2 were not there at all!) But when I got the case all the way out both seals (trans and t-case) looked fine with no major damage. There was some tranny fluid inside transmission adapter, but that seemed to be normal based on where the seals are.

So my question is could the missing bolts have caused enough play to cause an intermittent leak from a good set of seals or is there some thing else more common that I am missing?

Thanks

Have a look at Cruiser 54's "Renix Tips" for information on all earlier XJ's or he may answer here, till then check the list.

I'll check it out. I kind of figured that this was a more general question as it is not about the engine.
