Transfer shift noise??

Hello,

I have a 2000 sport automatic with 128,000 miles. While driving I can hear a slight whining/rubbing sound in the area of the transfer case shifter. When the vehicle is in 2WD I can accentuate this noise by slightly pushing forward on the selector and by lightly pulling it back rearward in 4WD high. I am only moving it ever so slightly. It's not a grinding noise, but a rubbing type of sound.

Thanks for your help.

could be the linkage in the case or the shift fork being out of whack. check front and rear ds ujoints. some might need replaced or simply be in need of some grease gun love. also, when was the last time you serviced your tcase? might want to drain it and open it up to see if everything's ok then refill it.
