Default transfer cases

I have a 1992 jeep cherokee it used to have a np231 transfer case, but that went out and, the only one i had lying around is a np242, which isnt all that great considering i had to swap out my tranny to fit the np242 and its all time 4 wheel drive. i have the np242 tranny and the np231 tranny to fit splines. my main question is is there a gear to gear transfer case(no chain driven)out there that will fit 21 or 23 spline cherokee trannys.

The NP242 has a full time option but isn't an all-time 4wd. As for a gear to gear t-case as far as I know there isn't one unless someone makes an aftermarket one. I know teraflex makes t-cases but not sure if they are gear to gear or chain driven.

Nope. sorry, Bro. All the OEM transfer cases to come in an XJ are chain driven. I believe the cheapest route to get a gear driven TC in an XJ would be to get a D300 or NP205 and an adaptor from Advance Adaptors but, I'm thinking that would A.) have a HUGE price tag attatched to it and B.) it would be HUGE overkill as far as required strength. If you blew out an NP231 in an XJ. You either ran it dry of oil or you flogged that thing like it owed you money.

The 242 has both full-time and part-time 4wd, along with 2wd and 4lo..

The shift pattern is 2wd - 4wd part-time - 4wd full-time - Nuetral - 4LO (2.72:1 lo range) and was used from '87 to '01.

The only real downside to that TC is there are no SYE's available. If you don't need an SYE then go for it...
