I have a 1999 xj it has a noisy transfer case for many years.probably the input bearing.I bought a used t case but it is different the oe one is # 5209 9212 . 231j se r # 108981c 272 ratio .The other one is 5209 9361 so ser # 82102c2. 242j ratio 272 ..... Can they be adapted easily i see the would be transplant has no vechile speed sensor in the tail/ swap tails? Will the year come off and swap? Then the switch is different too . Mine been making noise for over a 100k i could tear it apart my self it was just a time thing I drive it daily and can't stand to have it out of service for too long that why I bought the swap .quick and easy but now I'm not sure.

 

The np242 and np231 transfer cases will interchange, as long as they where both bolted to the same transmission.
