Default Transfer case sounds like a gorilla rummaging through a box of scrap metal.

Godawful sound happens and I'm not sure if it's actually engaging the front axle because I immediately shift it back. Driving in 2WD the vehicle functions well without any grinding or horrific and terrifying noises.

I just bought this vehicle so I am not sure when this started, what the cause is, etc. At this point I'm thinking it's time to pull out the transfer case and pull it all apart, but I know approximately jack sh/t about this topic.

What is likely to be the problem? What's the best way to fix it without going broke? If I have to pull it all the way apart what other maintenence/fixes/upgrades should I do at the same time?

I'm new to the club and hoping the smart/experienced folks here can offer some good advice.

1990 XJ - Inline 6 - Standard Tranny - Dana Front Axle - NP231 Transfer Case (I think) - 224, 000 miles.

I can't picture a gorilla rummaging through a box of scrap metal.......unless there's a banana in there.

Where do you live? Might be cheaper to replace the entire case as opposed to trying to rebuild it.

Look at your shifter do you have;

2 Hi, 4 Part Time, 4 Full Time, Neutral, 4 LO (NP242)

OR

2 HI, 4 Part Time, Neutral, 4 LO? (NP231)

Drain the fluid. See if there is metal in it. First step
