Default Transfer case shifter problem...

I went to put my XJ in 4wd today and when I pulled up on the shifter, there was no friction, almost like it had been disconnected from my transfer case. I searched the forums and couldn't find anything related to this. Either I don't know what I'm looking for, or it's simply not out there. I have a 1988 XJ FI 4.0 L6. Transfer case is an NP 231. Any ideas out there?

this may be a dumb question but have you checked the linkage yet? its pretty easy to get to just crawl under the drivers side and if one of the bushings gets worn the linkage will slip right out it is possible that is that simple.

If the linkage is fine there is a long thread on cherokee talk about the same thing. The jist of it is vacuum lines to the disconnect front axle or disconnect actuator they also tell a 2$ way to kinda sorta bypass the disconnect on the axle. Get your hands dirty don't pay a shop its easy and people are hear to help you.

It's a bushing...you're right. You would think that Chrysler engineers would design it better, but then again you wouldn't considering that it's a Jeep. Thanks for the help!
