Would the NP242 w/ Full time 4wd need Dexiii? The only reason I ask is I imagine there is some kind of clutch plate doobobber that would allow the slip for Full time 4wd that may be impacted from the wrong fluid. I have ATF+4 in there right now, I believe. Haven't noticed any effects but doesn't hurt to ask.

Nope there are no clutches in an NP242, it's a planetary gear differential with an intermediate shaft (one of the reasons nobody has a full SYE for these things). Any ATF will work. Follow the same guidelines as for the NP231.

Ahh, interesting. Is that intermediate shaft how the drivetrain can be used in regular conditions? I understand the concept of fulltime/awd vs parttime aka real 4wd but not how it's applied in this setting...
Plus I like knowing I can keep 1 bottle in the back that can cover most fluid discrepancies if I'm far away from civilization!

The NP231 is extremely simple: The main shaft runs front to back, so the rear wheels are always turning. No way out of this. When 4WD "part time" is engaged, the sprocket/hub that has the chain for the front DS on it gets slid over some splines and presto, the front DS is engaged. Otherwise the sprocket/hub just spins on a smooth section of the main shaft.
The NP242 has this as well, but between the rear output shaft and the input stage there's a differential. So you can select whether the front DS hub is locked with the rear end via the main shaft ("part time") or if it gets power via the intermediate shaft ("full time")
Basically they just slide a hub back and forth. lol PT/FT refers to the use case, not the actual function of the device.

On this trans fluid thing. I spoke to a dealer service manager once who said they are now using ATF+4 in the XJs with the AW4 because they don't carry Dex/Merc anymore and it works fine. IDK, but they won't change the fluid in MY XJ any time soon!

Ok cool. I wasnt for sure. Im using ATF+4 in my tranny....Is that a problem? I havent had a problem so hopefully i wont. Lol. I need to service both my tranny and transfer case anyway. So maybe when i do my tc ill just drop my tranny pan and service it while im there.

+4 is fine for a transfer case. Just not the AW4 trans.

What would you do in this situation? I am going to have to call him and let him know what happened, and ask him to cover the Cost of a new one, plus shipping. That’s minimal charges. Should I hit him for the total cost with my new mechanic? Or do I tell him the minimum and if I have to take him to court then I’ll hit him for all charges?
