transfer case drama
I am having a transfer case drama. I have a 94 XJ 4.0 AW4 SE that should have a 231 but has a 242 (np242J 5300 7856 3 13 92 1)? It doesn't like to stay in 4wd low, feels like it's skipping the chain or engagement dogs. I was going to pull it out and then discovered that the 242 has 5 positions and the 231 has four so I have a 231 shift gate and 242 transfer case. I tried to adjust the linkage but it's a salt car and the adjuster is rusted solid on the rod.
I am thinking what I need is the shift gate from a 242 equipped XJ? Or to put a 231 back in it. I have an np231 (np231J 5300 8208 10 23 89) out of a 90 XJ but it's cable and vacuum and the 94 is all electric. I was thinking about a Novak shift linkage but that will not handle weather I need a shift gate for the 242? Any data? |
You need to hit that linkage with some PB Blaster several times over a few days and get it broke loose then try adjusting it before you do any swaps. I don't know if just adjusting it will solve your problem or not, but it's what I'd do first.

Simple way change shifter from jy xj ,

The truck is from Mariland, I have another from Colorado and my daughters ranger from the north east. Rust does make everthing harder to do. It took mea week to do the ball joints and universals in the TTB, they just wouldn't move much at first.
I got it soaking. I just have nothing to compare the trow to, all three of the others I have are 231/231/207. The real question I have is do I have enough throw in the 231 shift gate to operate the 242? I know I don't have the correct positions but is 2wheel hi and 4 wheel low in the same place? |
can you take a picture of your shifter plate?? on the inside where your shifter sits... and you are going to have to change your driveshaft if you are going to change tc's...

I am only running 4.11s and 31's so if it works I will keep it. the other problem is the 231 I have is cable vacuum and the 241 is all electric, I don't know if I can just swap those parts on the two cases?
