Default which tranny rebuild kit would you buy? 200$ or 340$

89 jeep cherokee automatic 4x4
needs a tranny rebuild

looking into the rebuild kit and finding prices all over the board
anywhere from 195-400. some as much as 600 for bearings alone HA!

anyways i like to order from rockauto.com and they have 2 choices for a master kit it seems

one from a brand called parts authority for 195$ here
and one from Omix-Ada from 335 here

which would you buy.
keep in mind this is for a fixer upper mechanics special jeep
so while i wanna build this as nice and strong as possible it doesnt have to last me forever, just long enough to sell it.

any help or opinions is appreciated

I think I'd go for a scrapyard trans for about $300.
Of the choices you have listed, Omix is a known brand, normally OK. They often sell rebranded NOS-OEM parts. The other is an unknown, probably overseas-made stuff.

X2 on an inexpensive used trans with matching torque converter.

i could go pull one from a picknpull.
and put it in, but then what if something is wrong with that one?

or are you saying i should find one in the same year range with a blown motor but good tranny?

seems like investing and just rebuilding would be a better route?
but im curious to hear you guys out

Why would anyone recommend a used transmission? Could you imagine going through all that work only to find out your junk yard transmission is just as bad if not worse than the old one? If your going to do all that work do it right, dont half a## it. And dont forget either a new or reman torque converter. And be sure to flush the lines and cooler so you know its all clean

I say that from experience too and that was a chevy corsica, transmission was horrible to replace. When it was all said and done we wanted to cry when it was actually worse than the transmission that was in the car

When you pull engine/trans parts from the Junk Yard ( pick and pull ) always go for the vehicles that have COLLISION DAMAGE.

Chances are they were running fine up to the point of impact.

Of course that may not be true in all cases, but it should be for most.

I have a junkyard trans that I pulled to keep as a 'spare', but I also have a rebuild kit for it that will go in before it gets installed.

Same with T-Case, got that as well and will rebuild it and sit it aside as a spare.

That can happen, but dealing with a reputable yard and getting a good warranty helps.
Most XJ's are not in the scrapyard because the trans failed. I might make a different recommendation for a Chrysler minivan.
It can also happen with a rebuild kit once you get in there and find you need hard parts that weren't included and aren't inexpensive. Your $300 rebuild can possibly cost 2-3X that once you are finished. You are always gambling but it's your choice of games, lol.

OP is looking to get the XJ running so he can sell it, finding a working salvage trans with a warranty is probably the quickest way to do that.
