Default Trailer Hitch on manual Cherokee?

I just installed a trailer hitch on my 93 2.5L 5 speed manual RWD Cherokee. i know it's generally a bad idea to tow with a manual, and the 4 cylinder, but I'm hoping I'll be okay towing my small boat. Any suggestions? I hope I'm not making a mistake.

i prefer to tow with a manual theere was a recent thread on here that had a pic of the factory manual page that referenced the towing capabilities but im sure with just a small boat you will be fine

Good to hear. I can't imagine a manual making the load too terribly hard on the transmission, especially with a light load. I just looked at my owners manual and it didn't include any specs for the 2.5L, and also claims that you should tow w/ an automatic only.. so I panicked a little after the lengthy hitch installation. Thanks for your reply.

Default Towing

I have towed with both auto and manual and not much difference, however I prefer the manual tranny for towing because I could downshift on a downhill or when slowing for a stop. The auto wants to downshift alot when in hilly areas, drives me nuts.

Nothing wrong with using a manual to tow - I do it all the time!

You just don't find M/T tow packages because most people just don't know how to tow with a stick anymore (and therefore end up wrecking the clutch and usually screwing up the gearbox.)

And, the AMC four-cylinder is a "grunty" little engine - as long as your weight penalty isn't too severe, you should be fine. Especially since you'll be using the manual anyhow - gives you more control over what's happening.

I towed an 18' runabout with our 2.5 liter equipped 5-speed and did ok. It didn't like hills too much, but it made it.

You are. But I'm also willing to be that, unlike most of the yoyos out there, you actually know what you are doing when you drive your manual.
