How do you test the throttle position sensor on an 88 w/4.0L? Been trying to figure out my tranny isnt shifting and I think this may be the problem.

Im not sure how to check the TPS, I do know I had to replace mine in my Dakota a few years back and it was pretty cheap. It didnt effect my shifting though, it would just make the engine surge while using cruise control. If your trans isnt shifting you should look into the governor pressure sensor/solenoid. Again, this was in a Dakota not the Jeep but because they were FUBAR my trans wasnt shifting right. Was an easy fix to what I thought was a big problem...

Good luck!

What I did was take it off the throtle body. I put the meter to check ohms and I went wire by wire and wrote down the numbers it read. Open and closed. Then I went to autozone and checked the new one the same way. I could tell right away the old one was bad.

If you can't adjust it to the right ratio, then replace it. Also you can plug into the output terminal and slowly rotate the throttle open and the voltage should smoothly decrease. An analog voltmeter works better for this than a digital obviously. Any dead spots will cause a hitch in the acceleration.

Have you checked the fan clutch? If the fan clutch is bad it will seem like transmission is not shifting right. Just something that happened to me on my old Ford truck.

Where to go from here so far I have replaced the tcu and the tps also adjusted the tv cable but still isnt right. I can manually shift it with switches but it wont shift by itself. Ideas?
