Towing my cherokee! no bumper, FRONT HITCH????
 

ok, so my transmission broke, My cherokee does not have any bumper at all, all I have is a tow bar, and front and back hich on my xj. is there any way I can tow my cherokee from the front hitch? any adapters or anything that would help me tow the cherokee.. I am going to tow it with a silverado 1500 2000 that has a hitch on the back.. any IDEAS on what I can do.. dont really have much money :/ and need this done by this weekend. its a 3 hour drive!

Tow strap. Wrap it around something.

I've towed a car across the entire state of WI doing it.

Your **** is already broke, so there should be much thought required.

hey but cant they pull me over or something? im in az.. is that legal? its a 3 hr drive trough the freeway.. highway. :S.. any adaptors or anything that can hookup my xj from the front hitch to the silverado's rear hitch???

Not sure about AZ but as long as your not on the freeway you can legally do it here. So take all highways, no expressways/freeways.

Or head over to U-haul and get a car dolly. Just don't tell them too much about what your pulling. I've heard they don't always rent dollys to people depending on what they are pulling and what they are pulling it with.

I've always used a tow strap that didn't have metal hooks. I just looped or tied one end to a chunk of frame or subframe and wrapped the other end around the ball. Then you gotta sit in the car being towed and be the brakes for the both of you. And the wheel man for your truck.

All the u hauls I've been to wont rent you a dolly unless you tell them what you're towing and what you're towing it with. I rented one here in IL and picked up a car in Dousman, Wi. It wasn't much money but you can't get over 55 mph without the trailer "walking" around. Get it on the dolly and put the transfer case in neutral strap the cherokee down and off you go! Or get a tow bar.

IIRC you have to tow with all 4 on the ground or all 4 off. No 2 wheel towing.

And lemme rephrase my statement. Don't be honest with U-Haul when telling them what your towing.

no man, What I mean is. I dont really have too much money. I already have a tow bar just like the one in the link. what i want know is if there is any way I can use the front hich from my cherokee to somehow tow it with another car?.. like any adapters that would let me .. tow from a rear hitch and the front hitch.. :S. .. does anyone know about it?

How do you stop the trailering vehicle?

I would personally not do this. Sounds sketchy.

I have thought about this before, if u have a recovery strap u could loop it into the hitch and then put in the locking pin thing if that makes sense.

I'm thinking about something similar right now. I have a front hitch on my xj, and I was thinking about picking up a tow bar and welding up a setup to pop into the receiver so I don't have to mess with it at it's current location. I figure I can weld it up at my house and all I'll have to do is toss a pin in when I get up to where my xj is currently dead.

Spend $60 on a tow bar, $10 on some magnetic lights, and $5 on chain. Bolt brackets to stock front bumper mount using O.E bolts -

Towed mine 80+ miles, city/highway/gravel roads. Worked fine.

that would work great! how would i be able to do this??? i have a tow bar just like that one.. now .. did you bolted them brackets on the ..mounts? and how??????

This is the info you need? Just bolt the tow rig to where the original bumper bolted up.

Someone has to be in both cars one behind is the brakes. I've done it lots of times. Works.

you forgot to mention that the engine must be running for the brakes to work. With a blown tranny this may not be possible.

Which brings up another question...what happened to the transmission? It it is really broke, is it even possible to get it into neutral to tow it? And would it be safe tow with all 4 wheels on the ground if you could?

I would STRONGLY suggest you consider towing it on a trailer, not like this...
