Default towing a Cherokee with a Cherokee?

So my wife and I are both xj fans we keep all of hers close to stock no higher than a 3" lift. Mine are normally on much more technical trails. Ive always worryed about what if something broke. And I hate when we drive 2 jeeps to go play.

I was thinking could her 91 auto xj pull mine on a car dolly?

I know the jeep towing capacity is terrible. My question is not is it possible. But more along the lines of is it safe or will we be burning up transmissions and beating the hell out of her jeep?

Thanks

And the reason we take 2 jeeps is because she likes to 'think' she wheels sometimes.

And when shes happy more $$$ for my jeep if you catch my drift.

The Peep has a trans cooler and did two pulls home that day (XJ and MJ).
The dolly was terribly noisy but no problems with the pull (each pull trip was 3 hrs run one way), beautiful hot summer day, no problems with heat during the pull.
No problem with the pull, never pushed her past 55 mph and easy on the stops and starts. Extra caution required because every genius on the road will be drawn to you like a magnet.
I'd say you can pull it with an easy foot on the gas and vigulance and forsight on the braking. Dolly by Uhaul, $75 full day fully insured, no problems rig.
If your loading a dead vehicle, you need to be able to comealong or winch as there is ramping to load the front wheels on this outfit.
Happy trails!

Nice thank you just what I was looking for. About the trans cooler did you remove ac or just mount it towards the left side of the radiator

The Peeps an 89, rolled past 622000km, round the block a couple times, AC is a thing of the past, way past, so couple years ago when doing a rad replace the AC rad was removed.
I highly recommend mounting the trans cooler on its own suspension and spaced out from the rad. I mounted a cooler on the rad once with the ties and hardware supplied, vibrated thru that new rad in a year. Grrr
I run it on left side and the trans is original.

If u mount the auxiliary cooler towards the passenger side or the middle, u'll get more air flow thru the auxiliary cooler from the belt driven fan that spins all the time.

I dont see any reason why it wouldnt pull it. Its not like your actually towing alot of weight just take it easy with pulling it. I tow a pretty heavy boat with mine every weekend and its on 35s with 3.55 gears currently

Make sure your brakes are in good shape and stay out of OD, should be fine. Curb weight is only about 3300 lbs on most stock XJs

Ill run trailer brakes as well. Yeah I figure 3rd kick on cruise at 55 and watch the gas disappear.

It wont like hills but it will pull fine. I would recommend getting good brake pads and upgrade the rear brakes to disc.

Granted this is a 5.9 grand with 4.56's and a dana 44 rear. But it did have XJ leafs swapped into the back and was my tow rig for years. Pulled my 4500lb crawler on a 1500lb trailer with ease. I'd say with the right gears and a good tranny cooler. You'll be fine. Although you would be much better off with a small car hauler with trailer brakes.
