Default Torque Converter lock

I am looking to run a switch to lock my Torque converter when driving on the beach so Im looking for which wires they are under the dash. I know there are relays under the front passenger side glove box and was wondering which one I need to run the relay and switch to, Thanks...Tj

What does locking the torque converter do for you?

less heat in the trany it makes it direct drive like a clutch
sand is hard to drive in so it makes the aw4 trany get hot if the converter is always slipping

Is a tranny cooler not suffiecient enough to cool the tranny under those conditions? Also when its locked and you dont keep the rig moving, will it die like a manual would when you stoped but didnt push in the clutch?

Yes it will die that's why I'm hooking a shutoff relay to the brake pedal switch so when I hit the brakes it will dis-engage the Torque Converter. Having a manual over a auto is always better IMHO but since I dont have a manual this is the next best thing...Tj

According to this article http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoAutoSwitch.htm the TC will only heat up on deceleration of the motor not on acceleration. I will monitor the temps when I put a gauge on it and include it in the write up...Tj

I have been poking around TC lock threads all evening, and finally decided to post in this one, as this info is yhe closest to what I was wondering about.

I was going to put together a paddle shift mod and a TC lock for wheeling, the main thought I had was to be able to back against the engine down hills.

This last post makes it seem that this is the one thing the torque converter lock can't do.

My thought was to not just have a paddle shift, but set up the layout more like manual, using a foot switch on the TC-lock (when enabled) as an electronic clutch (locked when foot off switch, unlocked with foot on the switch).

What conditions is this unadvisable? I wheel in the northwest, and the hills are tight and need good control while coming down them, I also hate riding the brakes (heat and wear). first in low range is just below nerve-wracking coming down, and I hoped the TC lock would help. Average hill is passed in about 5 minutes, I think. Will this overheat it if locked?

Second question, am I accurate in believing that a locked TC results in a 1:1 engine to transmission ratio, and an unlocked TC varies from (idling engine& no trans rotation) to something less than 1:1? If you prevent a signal from going to the TC solenoid, will it never lock up or is there some condition that it will make it to 1:1? If there is a max ratio without lockup, what is.it?

Last question, on my jeep, the trans seems to shift straight from 2nd to overdrive unless I put it in third. I have a 5 mile hill climb at 45mph every morning going to work, and over the last few years Ive played with the trans and noticed it seems to shift strangely. Like I said, it seems to go from 2nd (assuming TC locked), to OD (TC unlocked). On the way up the hill itll toggle between some ratio above third and a ratio below third, but never third. I usually leave it in third (better mileage and it doesnt shift all the time, easier on the trans), and this usually seems very solid and rarely shifts out (Im assuming TC locked). The off road jeep used to he my DD and I dont remember this 'issue'. Is it normal for it to skip third? ( it may not be skipping it, just not staying in third long enough to be noticable).
