Any "legal" speed is what's in the manual as far as going from 2H to 4H. I don't think there's an upper limit for 4H.
Before shifting into 4L, you are supposed to be rolling from 3 - 5 MPH while the transmission is in neutral. The upper speed in 4L is very low, about 25 or so.

Just remember this!!! 4x4 is NOT the end all be all of driving in snow!!!!! Up here most minor snow condition accidents are caused by 4x4's !! It is because people don't realize it's 4 wheel drive NOT 4 wheel stop! I'm not saying you don't know this just putting the info out there invade you don't.

My 242 whoops your 231 in the snow.
If you NEED 4HI then you are probably not going too fast. Figure 55 tops.
4 HI is for loose surfaces ONLY. Any major traction and you run the risk of driveline damage.

i think they say to not shift from 2 high into 4 high at anything over 25 or so, i usually slow down to 10-15. i only had to use it once and that was coming down the side of an icy mountain road using the transmission to slow me down, didnt want the rear to break loose on me

Shift on the fly means just that:
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed".
Foot off the gas. Operate the transfer case lever. Tap the gas, let off again momentarily then go.
4-low is limited by engine rpm, which you'll quickly run out of. 25 MPH is about it.

HERE's what the manual says:
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

BTW, what transfer case do you have?
What are the indicated positions next to the lever?
