TJ to XJ switch

2 Attachment(s)
hey I have a 97 TJ that has 7.5" of lift and 35's
it gets 14-18 mpg
its killing me i drive 360 miles a weekend to see my girlfriend
and I need to save money for college next year (senior in HS)
i would never think of not owning a jeep so i was thinking of getting a 97 and newer XJ (needs to have airbags) putting on about 4" lift and 32's from what I see it still looks great, can do as much as I want to or have time to do offroad, and im hoping will do better in the mpg department

any idea how much those mods would cost, how it would do offroad in dried stream bed kind of offroading (Mass/ME/NH), how it would look and most importantly MPG?

thanks guys!!!

oh also how would it do flat towing my 2500# '55CJ?

a pic of my TJ so u know what i have now;

I think your going to be spending more on fixing up an XJ then you could ever loose on gas money.

Anyway, I think an XJ with 4" and 32s are going to get about 18mpg anyway.
I have 3.5" and 31's and get 18 highway

A general question about your TJ. Have you had it regeared for the 35s??

Towing should not be a problem, depending on gearing and how you drive my guess would be 19-mid20s hwy I believe some of the mid 90s XJ's had airbag option also.. just gotta find em.

An XJ will not get any more MPG then your TJ does..I'd just stick to the TJ and not spend the cash on a new rig...If ya really need to save gas buy a used high MPG car to frive back and forth to see the GF. or save even more and just get a new GF..:) (j/k)

i have a stock jeep, it has 235/75/15's, and im gettin around 16-17... so probably not much of a gain, i would just put dif gears in your tj...

the xj wont give you any better MPGs.. its about the same

i have the stock 3.73's so they kinda suck but its really not too bad with the 5 speed.

Ok looks like I'm better off just keeping my TJ which im happy about I guess, I just wish there was a way I could save a lot of money

besides ditching her she's a keeper haha

regear for better MPG's and like I site consider getting something like a Honda civic just for the trip to see her..My buddy bought one just to get to and from school and he gets 35 mpg's on the highway..
