Tire size
I'm about to get myself some winter tires for my 1998 XJ Sport. Mine is all stock. As far as I can tell my Jeep has the standard/factory fitted alloys. At present I have tire size 215 75 R15.
When I look at the various tire sites they all come up with a recommended size of 225 75 R15. So a little wider.
Couple of questions:
Will these fit my current rims?
What does slightly wider tires do for performance. Especially in wet, slush, snow conditions? I thought there' a school of thought that you need narrower tires for wet/slush/snow conditions.

Your logic on the skinny tire is correct.
225's were the common tire, 215's came on stripped down models.
When I lived in north eastern Canada, I found 235/75-15's to work really well on my rig when it was stock. (bfg AT ko's fwiw)
My sister runs 235's (bfg AT ko's fwiw) on her stock rig and makes it to work when full sized 4x4's do not ('course they probably have "all seasons" on)

I ran 30x9.50 BFG A/T's for awhile on stock rims before getting my lift and never had a problem. No rubbing and got me through quite a bit. Took the XJ up to Michigan to see the family for Christmas and they did extremely well in the snow - both on and off road.
