Throttle Position Sensor?

What are the simtums of a improperly installed Throttle Position Sensor?

EvilBlackXJ Mar 10, 2009 10:57 AM

Hesitation and stumbling while accelerating, engine running too rich, or too lean, it also has input into the transmission for shifting points. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

What about a '99 4.0L idealing at 1500+ rpm?

EvilBlackXJ Mar 10, 2009 11:04 AM

Yep. That could be a symptom. I take it that the wiring problem you found didn't fix your problems.

Check for vacuum leaks. That could have your idle too high.

nick_n_ii Mar 10, 2009 11:41 AM

Still looking at the wire problem. Just it all started after we changed teh TPS

EvilBlackXJ Mar 10, 2009 12:08 PM

There's not a whole lot that could go wrong with replacing a TPS, unless you were unlucky enough to get a bad TPS from the parts house. Maybe you disconnected something along the way that you forgot to reconnect or knocked a vacuum line loose. That wiring thing sounds like if it isn't a problem now, it could soon be. Fix that and go over the connections.

Yep, that's the game plan for tomorrow..

I don't mind trouble shooting, but I have one of those brothers that only calls when he wants me to work on his XJ..

EvilBlackXJ Mar 10, 2009 12:32 PM

Did he ask for money, too???

If not, you're good.

nick_n_ii Mar 10, 2009 12:35 PM

Nope no money he knows I'm broke. But I'm the mechanical one.

Instead of digging into it to much to day been on the net looking for the answer. I just don't feal like turning a wrench on my Birthday..

EvilBlackXJ Mar 10, 2009 12:43 PM

Happy birthday.

Get that worthless brother of yours to take you out for a steak!!! :p

nick_n_ii Mar 11, 2009 05:50 PM

TPS ended up being bad. Not just 1 but 2 were bad.

Jeep would ideal at 1200-1800 RPM, was just plan crazy..

EvilBlackXJ Mar 12, 2009 06:31 AM

So, now you're all good???

nick_n_ii Mar 12, 2009 06:40 AM

Very close t it. Now he's saying it has a cold start problem.. He has to feather the throttle to get it to start. I'm pulling what little hair I have on this one out.

XJ?2010 Mar 12, 2009 05:42 PM

Could be the O2 sensor if its a cold start problem

nick_n_ii Mar 12, 2009 06:03 PM

Well I got word from not it's very hard to start cold and idealing at 150 rpm...

This thing is driving me nuts..
