Default thinkin about rebuildin my 4.0

i got a 95 xj with about 176K on the motor
well im hearin a knock sounds like its comin from the bearings
i was thinkin about just gettin a new motor but dont have the $$$
i was wonderin if i can just resurface the crank and put in some new bearings
im moving soon and have a 900 mile trip through nevada and utah and im not tryin to get stuck in BFE
any suggestions

Is it burning oil my 92 started at 191k drove till 215k qt. every 1k think it was valve seals sold for 250 still on road so if yours is not burning any how loud is the noise are you sure its the bearings?

it aint burnin oil at all
its runnin rich tho and gettin like 9 or 10 mpg lol
the noise isnt so loud until it warms up then its pretty noticeable

You could always pull the pan and take some measurements on a few main bearings. Your crank still might be in good shape.

what oil pressure are you running at idle when it warms up? If you have excessive bearing clearances your pressure will be low.

when its all warmed up its at 20 right on the line

thats a good idea cuz i was about to change my tranny no matter wat lol
how do u check it do i gotta take off the whole transmission or is there some place where i can see it

Nope, that won't allow you to see cracks in the usual place (between the mounting bolts). you should pull the cover and check for loose torque converter bolts.

Plasti-gage the rod and main bearings and pay particular attention to the upper bearings.

Then a cracked flexplate is not your problem lol. Yeah I would drop your pan and plasti gauge your bearings to check the clearances. 20 psi is still pretty good pressure. Not super great but not to bad.

i just dont want it to break down on a 900 mile trip through nowhere lol
driving at 65 70 revvin at 2 grand for 4-5 hours at a time doesnt sound like it would be to good on any engine espicially one with a knock somewhere
