I pulled my steering column apart to tighten the tilt bolts (anyone with an 84-94 knows what I'm talking about). Everything went smooth but after I got it all put back together I found this spring thingy on the floor and it will not crank. I turn the key to the start position and nothing. The gauges all zero out so it seems like everything is working normally but.. no crank. Anybody know where this part came from or if it could be the cause of my problem?

It;s Jeff, right? Yowza, you went there, tough treatory. I'm gonna vote that spring is not your problem. Those gears the tumbler pulls on pull the rod to the ign switch. That relationship is not related to that spring best I remember. All I have now is that the switch its self has slots that let you move it up and down some. Being that the rod is pulled by the tumbler, sliding the switch DOWN might get it to engage. It "turns on?" (aux and stuff) but just won't crank? Cruiser has a great link for our GM tilt steering column. I'm on a new computer and can't access that easily but I'll look in my link, it might be there.

Thanks all. The rod was clearly not seated properly. I was able to start it using pliers. When I did, I heard the rod seat properly. I reassembled the tumbler and all is fine now. Still have no idea where that piece came from. Thanks for the links, I suspect that GM tilt column PDF will be invaluable, Lady Kenai.

ok, if i had to guess what that piece is.. perhaps a gutter spring keeping the wires routed somehow underneath the column

-Marc

edit: you would think if this piece is from inside the column something would act up but everything works fine

Just for giggles I just went carefully through the PDF. Wondering if maybe it's a different version of the "key in" switch retainer spring. (Page 50). They did change little things over the years, there were older version then the the column in the pdf

Is this info applicable to '96 steering columns?

Don't know myself. AMC (all makes combined), used the GM column. At some point after 90 when Chrysler bought Jeep they did switch to something else, don't know when.
