Terrible Grinding Noise when in motion
I've read a lot of threads and haven't come across my problem.
My daughters 91 jeep cherokee suddenly started making a terrible grinding noise when in motion. I checked for leaks, nothing obvious. Put it in gear (automatic transmission)...reverse and then drive and sure enough it sounds like it's tearing it self apart. Runs great so I figured something to do with transmission or drive shaft, transfer case, etc.
But then decided to tow it home and even in neutral it still made this terrible grinding noise!! NO difference when turning.
Not sure where to go from here...any advice would be so appreciated.

Is the transfer case in 4x4? Is the sound coming from the the front or rear of the xj? Little more detail needed... As a guess I would say make sure it's in 2wd and check your front and rear diffs.

It makes the noise when you're coasting in neutral? If yes, I would look at the t-case, and diffs. Doubtful it's the transmission.
It doesn't make the noise in any gear when sitting still?
Is it a constant noise?

91 Eh? Been watching the oil in the (rear) diff? You can chuck the front wheels, jack up a rear, and rotate that wheel forward and back with it in park. Check for play and see where it is. You could also just shift from forward to reverse and back, parked and see if and where it "clunks". As said ^, U-Joints go out often.

Yea ^, was wondering. Sudden eh? Maybe she just suddenly noticed it.
Well, if you could figure out which side of which end you might visualize jacking up a wheel, grabbing it and wiggling top to bottom and side to side. A bearing will get loose, rough, noisy, hot, smoke, then as it grinds the rollers and spits them out where the seal was.....

Thanks for all the speedy replies!
Let's see...trying to answer everyone's thoughts.
Yes it makes noise even while coasting in neutral. Yes the grinding is
constant.
I don't believe it's a wheel bearing the sound seems to come from
underneath, not from any one wheel.
I checked that it was in 2wd and not 4wd. As a matter of fact, when the
noise continued even in neutral I tried changing from 2wd to 4wd and
even neutral...with no change.
It does NOT make noise when sitting still.

yes it does kind of sound like a pipe scrapping on concrete...cause we even checked to see if something was dangling.
OR as my daughter said, "it sounds like a transformer crawled inside it and is tearing things apart." I know this last part isn't much help but with all the drama that a busted jeep brings, it still made me chuckle.

im back with more info
Sorry weathers been crap here. Jacked up the jeep and rotated the right front wheel. It seems apparent that the noise is coming from the transfer case. Asked my daughter again and the fact that the jeep popped and suddenly starts making the noise made me remember that this last winter we had put the jeep in 4h and it popped out making a horrible noise.
So now what? I'm at a loss.

Check the fluid in the transfer case. There are two plugs on the side of it. Take out the top plug and stick you finger in there to see where you level is at and what color it is.

That was his last post, and that was 9 years ago. Probably best to start your own thread about your problem.
