Well on my plug there is not two leads just one. This was covered above. I believe that only works on newer models where the coolant temp and engine temp sensor are on the housing of the thermostat

Ah. If you have a single wire the resistor goes between the wire and ground. Sorry I missed that.
At any rate the test you did verified the gauge reading varies with resistance, leaving the sender as the issue.

Yeah that's what it would seem like. Just seems crazy to get a bad unit right out of the box!!! Ugh. Next time I'm going to NAPA

I wish I could say it didn't happen often, but it does. Some are bad out of the box. Sometimes it's the wrong part in the right box. Sometimes the computer gets it wrong entirely. At least this isn't a half a day to get back out!
