alright folks, i was muddin last night and had to put my 96 xj into 4hi to get out of a spot and my tcase grinded like an 18wheeler findin gears. I've been told its my shift leakages which i can believe cause it feels like it wasn't to pop out of 4hi when it grinds; according to the prev owner the xj is lifted 3.5" so could it just be shift leakage or do i need a new tcase?

If they did a transfer case drop it is highly likely that the linkage was never adjusted.

i've been told it has one and i've been told it don't, i've never dealt with tcases other than changin the fluids in em at work, i don't know what i'm doin or lookin for as far as drops and adjustin linkage goes,

Look at the trans cross member. If it is not sitting directly against the frame rails it has a drop. There will be little spacers between the cross member and frame rails.

mine does the same thing kinda but it all together does not shift into 4L

^^^^ Adding on to what toaster said, the red thing in this picture is after market, if there is any thing like it in between the cross member and frame rail then you have a t-case drop and you should just need to adjust your linkage.

it's dropped, about 1'' sized bushings, don't know why someone would 1'' drop a tcase for a 3.5'' lift, but now that i know it's dropped is it just my linkage that i need to adjust?

I have to be devils advocate. Are you shifting properly. Are you taking your foot of the peddle and then shifting.

If the rear driveshaft is spinning faster than the front it will grind the gears. So if your rear wheels were slipping in mud when you tried to shift, it will grind on you to find the mesh between the teeth to lock the front and rear gears inside the TC

Yes that's very possible I guess I just assumed you where shifting correctly.

not sure if i am or not, i've need told with my transfer case i can shift into 4hi in drive at nomore than 10mph and into 4lo in neutral coastin about 2-3mph. I normally stop, put it in neutral then put it in either 4hi or 4lo then put it back in drive to try avoidin mitch matched speeds. When i had the grindin sounds from the tcase i was stopped in neutral when i shifted from 2wd to 4hi, put it back in drive and no sooner i put it in drive i grinded put if i push slightly down on the 4wd lever it stops,

You can shift into 4wheel drive at any legal speed.

Cruiser has done it at 80mph..
Ive done it at 70mph for science...lol

Hmm... Sounds like your shifting fine, I'd say crawl under and fiddle with the linkage a little bit, that would be the place to start.
