Is it weird to have a little bit of play where the slip goes into the Transfer case? i have a 1991 cherokee laredo with a 242 tc

Are you referring to up/down/sideways, or rotational (spline-wise) play?

when to rear drive shaft goes into the TC it has a tiny bit of like up and down play. its not the u joints its the slip that goes into the Tc

this isnt mine but thats where the play is. i was also wondering what is underneath that if i remove it. is anything going to fall apart or is it just the shaft

There shouldn't be any play there IMO. How much play do you have?
I've never taken a T-case apart, but there shouldn't be anything in there but a yoke seal I think.

there is a slight wiggle not much tho. i had it up on a lift and took the DS off and everything looked fine but when i put it back in and moved it it had slight play in the slip inside the transfercase

Then I would look for bad/loose u-joints or possibly a slightly bent/out of balance drive-shaft. JMO

i just replaced em a few months ago and i looked em over and they seem to be fine.

you can have a bit of play in that area, or any area where two gears mesh, its called backlash and must be present to alow the oil in between the gear teeth so they don't get hot and transfer pieces or break off the teeth. also, you have bearing in that area holding everything in place and bearings have a little play in them as well.

all that is in there is a seal, if i remember right. i had to take one apart to swap the input and that gear right htere when i put a different transfer case into my grand cherokee. its all very easy to mess with so pop it off and check everything in that area if you would like.

i would imagine that if you have that much angle on your driveshaft (if yours is that steep also) then that could be your issue. might have to much angle on your u-joint for it smoothly spin.

wait until someone else verifies this though, as i am just speculating from being an aviation mechanic for a number of years.

is there a bushing inside of the slip area that could be causing a vib if broken?
