Default Are tailgate pistons "struts" Universal?

Just pulled tailgate struts off of an 89 XJ (don't know trim level) but they seem to be an inch longer than my tailgate extends. Will I have any problems if I muscle them on? Could it end up weakening my hinges?

Oh the easy answer...compare them to the ones you pulled...doesn't work since they ones I had in were for a Bronco II.

Thoughts?

Not sure what the difference may be but they were the same from 84-94 and were changed in 95.

Well I went to rockauto.com and their pistons seemed pretty universal for all years of XJ it just looks off and I'm not sure that one inch is healthy for the hinges. Plus, it will be a pain to try to compress the pistons to get them mounted.

I would check clearance to makre sure that when they are compressed that they will still tuck correctly.
