Default tached cluster into my 91 XJ works! but have one question

hey guys,

I recently swapped in a tached cluster into my 1991 XJ 4.0

All the gauges work great but i still need to buy the oil sender and temp sender to get those gauges to work...

here is my question,

I swapped in a 1994 cluster and my jeep is a 1991. I called the jeep dealer near me to get the parts... he is saying the oil sender is good for the years thru late 80's to 91 and then the 92-96 oil senders are the same.....

so which do i buy? the 1991 sensor because my jeep is a 1991? or the 94 sensor because my new cluster is a 1994?

i just want to get this right because i cannot return the part after purchase.
thanks!

call him back and ask what end of the sending unit is different.
1) 84-91 different at the block from 92-96?
2) 84-91 different at the back of the gauge than 92-96.
3) or different at both ends regardless of year (if thats the cause nothing will work that he can offer)

Yeah everything I have search came up with nothing for the 1991 cluster swap. I'm kind of leaning towards 91 senders but still not to sure.... They are around 50$ each so I want to get it right.

I'm hoping someone has done it to there 1991 xj and has some answers.

Seems like 1991 senders should work since all other senders worked for the rest of the 1994 cluster (tach, volt, gas, speedo)

Anymore input would be great!

i was checking out my connections on my XJ and noticed that my oil pressure sending unit (dummy light) uses a single male spade connection on the sender and female receiver on the wiring side which only has 1 wire. I noticed every parts web site shows a plastic plug bullet type connection for 92-96 senders.

this is the same with the Temp sender(dummy light) the sender has 1 post male connection and a 1 post single wire female connection. The 92-96 are also a plastic plug bullet type connection which my wiring would not support.

So im leaning towards the 1991 sender because it supports my wiring.

parts website are telling me that the senders i need are years 1984-1991 which have the spade connection like this... this is a pic from rock auto.

this is the 92-96 oil pressure sender.

this is my temp sender type here for again the 1984-1991

this is the temp sender for 92-96

I just really want to get this right because parts in canada are expensive these 2 senders will run me about $100 for quality or $70 for aftermarket.

i have a electronic controlled speedo cluster like all the 91-96 cherokees, Im just not sure if the senders from the 84-91 parts that looks like i need will work with the oil/temp gauges them self... i don't know if there is different resistance between the 84-91 senders from the 92-96 senders which makes the gauges operate differently??

i hope this all makes sense....... ughhh

You have to change the sensors to one for gauges from the dummy lights they are different
