Default T-case questions

I currently have a 242, I think. It has a 4x4 part and full time. Anyway, I know that this is not the best t-case for the XJ. The better one is the 231, is there a better year make and model, to be on the prowl for? Does anyone know what it would take to put the Ruby Roc-Trac t-case in this XJ. I want something that is a direct swap for what I have. I don't mind driveline mods I will be adding a SYE kit at that point anyway! FYI 87 Waggy XJ AW4 trans 4.0 Renix engine.

I have read that the 231 will take more abuse. There are more things available for them aftermarket; 4.1 kits, SYE, etc...

Well you can get a SYE for the 242 it is referred to as the hack n tap. But as long as you get a 231 that came from the same tranny that you have you will be alright.

Any 231 from '88 to '99(after '99 the gear pitch is different) will work, one from a YJ will clock about 3* flatter, the big difference is in the input shafts, spline count and length, but your input is swappable into any 231 so your set there.

Now if you want the strongest 231 you can do, use a YJ case with the guts out of a S-10 pick up, the S-10 has a 6 gear planetary instead of the 3 gear planetary in the Jeeps and the chain is 1 1/2" wide instead of the 1" wide the stock Jeep one is..

I hope this all helps out....

I personally wouldn't trade my full time 4x4 for nothing. I have heard mixed reviews on the 242 and 231..some say 231 takes more abuse some say they both can handle their own. The only thing I have really read differently is the SYE's 242 is hack-n-tap. 231 has a few options.
