When you engage 4wd, it puts a load on the front driveshaft, axles, etc. all of which are just freewheeling while in 2wd. The load could cause noises to appear.

Make the noise happen in a place where you can have somebody under the vehicle to listen for the noise ( up on jackstands, hoist, anything safe). If you can't find anything conclusive you have 2 options: take it to a professional as in alot of cases they can tell what it is just by hearing it (doesn't have to be a shop either, could be a knowledgeable friend, uncle, what have you), or number 2: start throwing parts at it. I do not recommend number 2 as it can be quite expensive and frustrating.
If I were you, I'd buy a service manual or even just use the search function here or on Naxja and figure out the correct way to adjust the t-case shifter linkage. Hell, maybe you'll get lucky and someone will post the procedure in one of your 3 threads about this issue you're having.

No rack and pinion in an XJ. Could mean the steering box but I don't know how that would make noise when accelerating unless the steering linkage is f-ed .
