Synthetic 10w-30 and Lucas Oil Treatment in Cold Weather?
Hey all, it's time for an oil change and I have some Mobile 1 synthetic 10w-30 High Mileage but was thinking about adding a quart of Lucas Oil Treatment into the mix for the first time. My only concern is that it's been consistently cold here in Nashville (15-30 degrees) and was wondering if the Lucas Oil Treatment was a good, bad or neutral idea for cold weather.
Thoughts?
Thanks as always,
J

go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and read about lucas. It's the only "actual" independent test i've seen about it.

Thick/gooey doesn't flow well when cold.....good flow equals good lubrication. 0W30 and 5W30 flow better than 10W30 when temps are below normal operating temp. At normal operating temp, all 3 are the same viscosity. Most wear occurs at below normal operating temp.

here's one, not the oiriginal, but a newer set of info http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=1360651
The original test bob had done seems to be deleted for some reason (maybe he got sued or something), but basically he added lucas to oil in the directions on the bottle, in a test like the little boxes you see advertising lucas in the parts store, and one with pure, regular old 5-30. The Lucas mixed oil foamed extremely bad, don't know why, don't care. I have run straight oil in all my vehicles and all have made it over 200K, and all my customers that take care of thier car most have 150-250 that drive older cars and have no problems.
Also mobil 1 is not as good as most of you think poke around bob's and you'll find independent testing done. I use a "non name brand" oil in my shop and thier syn and never had a prob.

Stay away from lucas it is way too thick. If you get a bottle of it and pour it out it looks like that carmel syrup stuff you put on ice cream. According to many UOAs (used oil analysis) Rotella T synthetic 5w40 shows the best wear numbers for the 4.0L. It has great cold starting properties and thickens up at operating temp a little more than 5w30. I've noticed higher oil pressure at hot idle and it sounds a bit quieter too. Put this oil in year round and use a good filter (Purolator Pure One) and drive worry free. The members of Bob is the Oil Guy forum also have come to the idea that Rotella is what works best for the 4.0L based on UOAs, not just "that the manual says to" or "my dad used X brand oil for 45 years". The numbers have showed that with a 40 weight oil the iron wear numbers were almost half that of a 30 weight oil in the 4.0L. The Iron wear was even higher with Mobil 1, which makes sense because a lot of engines show higher Iron numbers with Mobil 1.

Hmm, I personally don't like rotella for the cost when valvoline premium blue has better wear numbers and I can get it cheaper, but may have to use some valvoline premium blue in my next oil change in the 5-40 syn flavor

Valvoline premium blue is also a top oil for the 4.0L in a 40-weight. Too bad they don't sell it near me.
