oil pressure had been fine. only thing i noticed was boiling water sitting in the intake manifold when it died on me today. ill check compression on cylinders 3 and 4 tomorro. could it be possibly just a head gasket?

The cracked head is WAAAAAAY more common on the 2000-2001 than on any other year XJ. The 00-01 came from the factory with the infamous 0331 cylinder head, which has a casting defect between cylinders 3-4, making it suspect for cracking there.

You have a 97, which should have the 0630 head, which is a great head. Doesn't mean it can't crack, but it does NOT have the issue that the 0331 cylinder head has.

I would start with a compression test on all cylinders. Looking for 120-150, with no more than a 30 psi variation between cylinders.

Test your way to a solution. No guesswork.

water is in your INTAKE MANIFOLD? like with the throttle body?

If it is just over heating check your thermostat and water pump.

How hot did you get it?

no specific isssues with the 96 engine or the bordering years.

They all can crack regaurdless of year late 1999 to mid 2001 are the top crackers, drain oil into a 6 qt container and see if you have more than 6 qts. My 2000 xj head cracked between cylinders 3 and 4 you can see a fine line of green straight down from the oil fill cap. Any ways if you overfill the 6 qt container,or able to see the differance in the oil,Because my oil you couldn't tell by color or what it looked like (so this isn't always a surefire way to tell no matter what they say) I was able to tell first by the 10 qts of brown oil that I drained then by looking in between #3 and 4 cly. glName: headpop.gif

One more thing low oil pressure isn't always part of a head cracking, my oil pressure was fine and still is so this is only a 50/50 thing, just like the color and texture of the oil.Coolant loss is a 100 percent thing as long as you have no leaks etc, overheating, boil-off, etc.
