It is not really necessary to run a SYE if you dont want to. Most lifts come with some sort of transfer case drop. I bought a Rubicon Express 4.5" lift and it came with spacers to drop the t-case but I choose to go with the SYE cause I didnt want to loose ground clearance. I would recommend going with the t-case drop and some angle shims on the rear end to point the pinion up towards the t-case for better drive line angle until you can afford the SYE kit.

i run 6.5" in the rear with no SYE, Shims, Xcase drop, or Hack N Tap. I have had no issues. each jeep is different. You could not need one where your buddy with the same set up will have the same lift and need one. If you are really concerned about it do an Xcase drop and shims in the rear. It will cost you just a little bit and be a decent fix

Like posted above, every Jeep is different. I had an old 95 XJ with about 5 inches of lift, no sye kit just a transfer case drop. No problems at all. Before I had my 6.5 inch lift on my 2000 XJ, I had a 3 inch lift and had all kinds of vibrations. Its hard to know exactly whether or not you will need one. I would go with the tc drop and see how that works first.

you can tell by if the crossmember supporting the transmission is mounted flush on the unibody or if there is a "block" spacing it between the unibody and the crossmember.

All depends on how much you want to spend. Im very happy with my lift, its a 4.5 Rubicon Express Super Flex system. I believe I paid $1200 w/ Procomp shocks from 4wheel parts.
