Typically, the standard length SYE is fine for the longer wheelbased XJ.
The super short ones are typically required YJ's/TJ/s (short wheelbase) with large lift.

Exactly. Don't spend a lot of extra money on a super short SYE for your XJ.

not only is it more expensive, you most likely have to get a custom driveshaft instead of pulling one off the front of an auto Cherokee, and you have to pay for the speed sensor adapter cause the stock one will not fit it.

What is needed to make a front DS from an auto work in the rear? Do all Cherokees have a slip yoke on the front.

They all have slip style front shafts but some I believe had a cv joint, stay far away from cv's. They will bolt rite onto the SYE you buy and bolt to the rear like factory, no modification needed. I run a 93-95.5 V8 Grand Cherokee front shaft with 6" lift, it's a little longer than an XJ front shaft.
