i got a 98 cherokee how do i know if its got a sye in it and is the tcase-272 any good

If its all stock it wont have a SYE that would be an aftermarket add on.Are you sure its not the 242 TC?

it might be it was all muddy so....and idk if it was replace with a sye or not

if the jeep is all stock it probably doesn't have an SYE. snap some pics for a reference on here.

let me rephrase will i have to rip apart the t case to find out? and am i really gonna need one for abot 3.5" of lift

No on ripping apart,there will be a tag on it,needing a SYE depends on if you get bad vibes andwhat your going to do with it.

If you were to have a sye you would have a double U joint at the t-case, stock only has one
242 t-case 2h-4part time-4full time-neutral - 4low
231 t-case 2h-4part time-neutral - 4low

A sye is recommende after 3" of lift , but you can get away with a 1" tcase drop instead

all this time i thought i had a 231 transfer case. i have a 98' limited 4.0l auto. so my TC is a 242?? i have the 2h-4 part time-4 full time-nuetral-4 low setup.

Yes, you could. However, t-case drops are considered a band aid for the problem, while a SYE would fix it.

Personally, I'd install the t-case drop only until I had enough to SYE it.
