Default swapping t-cases?

hi all - just looking for your opinion on whether or not this is possible:
my 1998 xj has a very tired t-case (I think its the np231, part time). I have access to a free, np 242 part time / full time t-case from a 1996 or 97 4.0L ... do you guys think they'd swap over?.. is it possible to make a part time 4x4 a full time 4x4?.
Some one told me that the only difference is an extra diff in or near the full time t-case?. But, im no expert and Id be gratefull for any and all advice before I attempt anything!.
Thanks guys.

Drive shaft length won't change but there is the possibility of having different spline lengths but with the years close you will prob have the right length. Keep in mind if you plan on upgrades in the future the only thing for the 242 is a hack and tap, 231 has that as well as full SYE, 4 to 1 low range and 2 low kits. Plus no internal diff. It isn't known to be as bad as the AWD cases with a diff but not as strong as just planetaries.
