Try to find a 92-95 XJ front axle. Those years will be identical to yours.

I believe the D30s all the way through 2001 would bolt into your XJ but, they switched to Low Pinion D30 for a few years in there somewhere. You want a High Pinion D30. Anything 91 and older, most front D30s had the vacuum axle disco. You don't want to fool with having to plumb vacuum down to your front axle to make one of those work.

If at all possible don't use a D30 from 00-01 thats the LP.

I think that year range would work fine for you. (95-97)

Actually for the most part the D30 from 91-99 are the same. Should bolt right up without an issue. The only difference in the 00-01 was they went to a LP. Other then that they are the same. One other thing to look for is get one that is non ABS if yours is a non ABS already. The ABS axles will work you would just have to remove the ABS crap. If yours is ABS then you will have to find an ABS axle. Also remember your 92 has the 260 style axle ujoints and the 95+ have the 297 style ujoints which are stronger. If it was me I would look for a 95+ non ANS and you get the beefier axle shaft ujoints and a good upgrade. Also make sure it is the same gear ratio as your rear axle.

If you look at the axle shaft up by the steering knuckle you will see a white ring with teeth and a sensor with a wire coming from it. That's used by the ABS system.I could take a pic of the ABS axle I have in the garage. If you have the ABS you already have the 297 style axle ujoints. Now if you get a non ABS axle you could swap the axle shafts and sensor from yours into the new axle if memory serves me correct.

Yeah when you look at yours you will see it pretty easily as that ring will be on the shaft at the steering knuckle. When it warms up abit I'll go take a pic of mine, although I took the abs sensors off. I am actually just going to pull the axle shafts and put em in mine though, a lot less hassle then dropping the whole axle.

Is your axle bad or something? Curious why you need to swap axles.

As for tools you will mainly need just simple hand tools to do most of it. If you do swap axles make sur eyou change out the UCA axle bushings since they can be a pain to get off on the jeep and when it's off the jeep would be a good time to go ahead and swap em out.
