swamper on rack
I just picked up a 5th trxus mt at summit racing yesterday. Right now it's shoved in the back with my seat folded down. I don't mind this but i'd rather have the tire on the roof or something than back there. That strong rubber smell gets to me after a while. I have the stock roof rack and wondered on how i could make a mount for the tire? I could buy a roof rack but $$'s kinda short since i just bought the tire and a ton of steering parts.
feel free to show me your setups.
thanks

my set up is two heavy duty tie down ratchet straps. works great, assemble them in a criss-cross fashion adn your good. put some cardboard or something between tire and roof so that it wont squeek.

This is what I'm running on my jeep untill I can get the time and money to make my own rack. It is a much less expensive route than buying a full rack.

It works well enough for now, then I will integrate it into the rack that I build.

its just plain unsafe having a large spare up there, sure its been done, but those weak crossbars will snap off and the tire will impale a small child playing hopskotch in the street in an accident.
no idea how big tires your running, but if its big enough to have your rear seat folded down its gonna be a pita to get up on the roof and down by yourself.

its easy to get it up there, but you have it too high, you need it to sit on the body or else itll be even more unstable. and check your straps occationally. thought KTM is right, in an accident it would come off, not sure if your insurance would cover that, idk.

Thanks for your suggestions. it's a 31" trxus mud terrain. They are heavy sob's too but im a bodybuilder so i can handle it I have the seat folded down because i store my toolbox and big bag with two jacks and straps in it so i need more room with the spare in there.
I am worried about safety but considering my daily commute is 1440 feet at 25 mph, i don't see myself wrecking and having the tire become a flying saucer. I live so close to work that i walk most of the time and drive only when it rains...or i'm lazy. I like the rack that 99xjlove suggested but i'm wondering how much full roof racks cost? if it's just a little more then i'd rather spend on a full rack than just a cross bar.
Will leaving the tire directly on the roof (not the racks) do any harm to it? Will it make a dip in the roof? I would like to lock the tire up there so it cannot be stolen and i don't see how i can do that with it on the roof.

I have mine mounted in my Surco. It is a bit of a pain to get off there, but its not like you do it every day. I didnt like the idea of a spare inside taking all my cargo space and I also take my 4 year old with me alot and I feel its safer for her with the tire on top.

I bought it from Summit racing, its a 45x60 the rack is now $190 and the mounts are $43. I made my own light mounts and spare tire mount.

I went the Surco route as well. I think after the rack, gutter mounts, and shipping I paid somewhere between $200-$250 at Summit. They seem to be the least expensive place to buy them. Good racks, easy install. You can either fab up your own way of holding down the tire or you can also buy their accessory part for it.

I'm reading about a Mopar Tire Carrier. It's two curved bars going across with the tire in the middle. I can't seem to find it online or how much it cost.
