MUCH better than the stock 30 I'd buy it if my "want" listed wasn't so long.

its a double edged sword really. you move the weak point from the shafts to the gears. some love it, some hate it.

Another thing to consider is the difficulty in finding 30 spline axleshafts in an emergency when/if you break one.

I'm running Yukon 27 spline alloys with Super Joints and a Lockright and it does the job just fine.If a shaft breaks I can replace it with a stock trail spare to get me home.

I think you can get a D44 and install it for the money.

The method to my madness in dropping the kind of cash that a Super 30 kit costs, would be to have no broken shafts.

I plan on going this route eventually. It just makes sense to me. Hell, you can get it for $379 at www.completeoffroad.com.

i honestly dont think a super 30 kit is going to stop me from breaking something up front but i dont think it would hurt. The only thing i dont like about it is that if i do break im not going to have a 30 spline shaft on hand. Im going to be running 35x12.50R15, 4.88 gears, and i want to run a locker up front but the only locker iv liked so far is a trutrac. Iv already got a ruffstuff diff cover for the front and i powder coated it so that sorta takes OX cable locker out of the running. ARB lockers are expensive and im not to impressed with the compressor on them.

trutracs arent lockers. just run allow 28 spline shafts with spicer 760s or CTMs if you want beastly u-joints.

i think its a good idea. to swap a HP 44 in is expensive and to swap a lp 44 doesnt make much sense when you look at it. if u are running a 30 spline hp 30 the strength difference isnt that much. you wont see any breakage running 35's with that kit. no way. i would guess that you could go up to 37's with no worrys. we are running 37 inch mickey Thompson baja claws on a locked hp d30 in our cj. that has 27 spline chromolys w/ yukon superjoints and 4.56 gears. we have yet to break anything and we wheel it pretty hard.

it has a tired old 4.2 but i still think you wouldnt see any trouble with your 4.0

like already said, the idea is not to break stuff, i like the idea of strong shafts, but i wouldn't run those beastly unbreakable u joints, i'd rather run good ole spicers, that are good and strong, but i'd rather keep the u joint as the week point. easiest trail fix, unless you're competing, then everything should be as unbreakable as possible. just my theory, i'd rather replace a u joint, easy to keep spares, and easy to replace and cheapest.

on toyota axles i know guys that will replace the bolts on the back of the bearing with grade 2 or something, so they are the only part that will break, when they do they back out the broken part, and put new ones in.

yeah but when a u joint breaks it usually takes the ears on the axle shaft with it

ya, if you don't catch it right away it is possible. if you hear the u joint snap, and stop you're usually ok. if you think oh that was just some normal pop, i'll try to keep going, then you usually hurt yourself.
