Suddenly, rotting carcass smell - BAD
Vehicle sat over the weekend, parked and it was fine, get in today and it smells horrible.
There's nothing in the interior, so I don't think I could have missed anything. Thoughts? |
Airbox? Vents/ductwork? It happens...
|
Yep. Critters crawl into impossible places, die, and announce their presence.
Get under the thing with a flashlight, poke into places you wouldn't suspect. Another possibility - a prank? |
Keep sniffing around until you puke. When you do, that's the location of the dead snake.
|
All over the exterior, under the hood, no smell.
Get inside, ahhh! No smell from vents... |
Does it smell after you start it,or before?
|
Under the rear seat? Under the dash??
|
Do you have a dog? Does a friend have a dog? Try plopping one inside the car and see where they end up sniffing the most. There's a good chance they'll lead you right to it.

To be fair tho, I can now barely smell it. Wth? |
Stop eating Taco Bell for lunch, LOL
|
I just came across this. Doubt it is your problem but who knows?
Smell: The scent of burning rubber or hot wires will often accompany alternator failure. A pulley that isn't in alignment or not turning freely will cause more friction on the belt, which creates heat and then the smell of burning rubber. The hot wire scent can be caused by an overheated alternator, one pushing too much power through the rotor and stator. |
Mine did this, i came to the conclusion that it was my carpet being wet from the holes in my floorboard. Do you have any rust underneath? Mine was kinda a moldy smell. So check your carpets/ floorboards

Thanks all! |
Check under the rear seat. A few years ago on a Colorado trip some mice found their way INTO the passenger compartment and set up camp under the rear seat. We only found them once they started leaving "presents" and chewed up bits of paper in the rear cargo area.
Another place I've found rodents and worth checking: in the air box under the filter. |
Is there a female sitting in the Jeep every time you smell this?
tee hee |
Ha!
|
Really tho, have u pissed anyone off lately? When I was in the Army one of my buds had an x-girlfriend put a fish in his car up under the seat in the springs. It took him 3 weeks to find it. Car never did smell right after that... it's hot in San Antonio.

Ran over any Zombies lately that may be hung up in the differentials 8>)

in the air box under the filter would be my first bet

It sounds like a solid case of "perma-rot". Sure you didnt push some gasious fast-food leftovers into your seat cushions? Does it get worse when you sit in the seat?
|
I find mouse evidence on the intake manifold sometimes. Also possible for a small critter to crawl up the evap tube and die
I found a mouse nest under the rear seat one time, jute padding from the front seat and turds laying around, still don't know how he got in |
My previous jeep ( a black 00 limited) I had a gallon of water and bust open in the back seat AND the way back near the spare. After a few hours in the hot sun that jeep would smell like absolute death.
My girlfriend wouldn't set foot inside. Not even 6 black ice air fresheners could come close to masking the smell |
Thanks for the help all. It was a package a deli meat that someone else did indeed leave in my truck (accidentally).
It was in the passenger seat, snagged on the rail closest to the center console. This is why it was so hard to see, and looks like moving the seat back and forth during the heater/evap core install ripped the package open. Holy hell Im glad that's over! |
So it WAS a rotting carcass!
|
Glad u finally found your meat!
|
Good call!

If you actually read the thread, you can answer the question yourself
|
A little mustard and should be good still for a sandwich
|
Aged deli meat is best. How do you think salami gets so tasty?
|
Many many years ago i went fishing with a friend from work. He took a tub of chicken livers as bait. Didnt catch much, but had fun. We call it a night and clean up. He puts the livers behind the seat with his tackle and rods and off we go. A week later, of not driving it, it reeks of death. He goes for the tackle box and thats when he found it. The tub of chicken livers, cooking in the summer heat. Lid popped. He forgot they were even there. It was bad. Beyond rancid. Eye watering. That was not an easy smell to get rid of.
