I had a guy at a tranny shop take a look at it. He thinks changing the trans mount will fix this problem. He saw a split in the rubber when he took a close look. Will post update when I get around to changing it.

i found that problem on mine. it was my driver side motor mount. its hard to visually tell if its ok because its under the manifold. to check it with the motor running there a old trick. with the car running and the hood open put the car in drive and hold the brake and gas like you would if you were brake torqueing it( im sure if your a car guy you done this many times before!) only u dont slam on the gas u just give it quick bursts to see if you motor jumps up. this checks the driver side mount. for the passengers do the same only in reverse. this will imediately tell you wether u need mounts or not. hehe remember to hold the brake i dont want to hear about your car going thru ur garage door becuase you let the brake go. like i said before reading everyones symptoms i remember having that same issue and being annoyed as f*** with it. hope this helps one of you guys. let me know if it works for you.

Is everyone having a loss of power while the noise is happenning? Like it's not engaging? My mounts look good but the loss of power....still leads me to Transmission. Even after I get rolling in low...and give it some go...and it does it again.
Okay that is different than my issue. I have no sudden loss of power when it happens, just the vibration and noise.
To comment on the other post I agree you can sort of check the engine mounts but really cant see if they have a crack in some places.
Hopefully I should know more today. I brought my car into my trusted mechanic to have a look at the several gremlins that I have. Just got the car with 112K and am hoping to have it as a DD.

Good advice. Seems more likely to me that it would be motor mounts, as dropping the TC stresses them at a different angle.
Alright got an update on my truck tonight from my mechanic. In regards to the vibration and noise he doesn't believe it to be anything specific to the drive-train or motor. Everything checks out. He is not sure what the noise is either but rules out all other major items. Its just quite odd that you can find a lot of people with this problem but most people have a hard time figuring it out or it ends up being nothing. Ill still keep searching though.

I have a similar problem to this, straining sound, vibration at start in hard acceleration, and a little loss of power from start, I was thinking something with the tranny fluid. I noticed that when I last changed it the noise and vibration stopped, then came back after driving a few times. But I also thought it would be the cluch not working properly. Hope someone has an answer

Took mine to a transmission shop and they did a bunch of test drives and torque converter stalls...and they say it's not the transmission...they think it's the Cats on the exhaust....I can't understand how that will cause only powerloss in low and not while on the highway doing 80 in passing gear?
Do you think Cats are the problem?

I did a little experiment to see if I could diagnose the problem. I put a small chain thru a rubber hose, and used it to secure the xfer case to the skid plate. (temporarily). This is meant to prevent the engine torque from twisting the drivetrain. Viola! Noise and vibration 95% gone. This leads me to conclude it is the motor and/or trans mounts. Both are going to be changed soon, when I do my SYE. Kinda short on time and dollars right now, so it may be awhile I have to feather foot the accelerator.
Edit: I don't have any loss of power like some have reported.

I will double check my mounts...but from the tests we did today at the transmission shop...they all look good...starting to think since my jeep has 2 pre-cats and 1 cat....that maybe there is some truth to that..and maybe that is why I get P0303 every once in a while....going to take it to the muffler shop next....I will keep you posted.

Went to the muffler shop and they did alot of checking and they say "No way this jeep is having blocked cat or exhaust problems....go's too good! They test drove it and had it on the rack... SO....I am still leaning on the transmission being the problem. Yesterday when I did some power brake tests with the muffler guy...we felt the strain and it got worse as I did that a few more times.
SO back to a different transmission shop and see what they say. It maybe just time to get a refresh on it anyways....I have 170690 miles on it now.

I thought i had good motor mounts and trans mounts unitl a friend saw my driver side mount and said that thing is bad. I didnt believe him but i already had the manifold off so i pulled of the motor mount and the rubber came out in 3 pieces. Then i replaced all the mounts and i filled the trans mount with silicon to make it stiffer.
If you see cracks in the mounts then they probably need to be replaced.
