Storing an engine?
 

I am going to pull the engine and transmission out of a Junk XJ before I scrap it so I will have a spare, what should I do to the engine before I go to store it? It will be stored in an enclosed area, out of the weather.

Fully assembled? For how long?

Yes fully assembled, and it will be until my current engine quits, which hopefully won't be any time soon.

After turning it over by hand once or twice I would pull the valve cover off and relieve the pressure from whichever valves were open by backing off the rockers. This way, all valve seats are coated and there is no pressure on the springs. Obviously, you'll have to reset them later. After that, I would seal up every single hole with heavy gauge plastic and high-grade 3M tape. And, I would also drain the oil. If you happen to be storing it on a stand, turn it upside down every few months. Other than that, so long as it's indoors, I wouldn't worry about anything else.

Edit: I personally would drain the coolant from the block also.

I would leave oil in it but I would put some cheap new oil in it and I would also pull the spark plugs and put some trans oil in each cylinder that will stop the cylinder from rusting then seal it up air tight or the best you can . removing the rocker arms is good for the valve springs , all the parts can stay under the valve cover but bolt the cover back on to help seal the motor .

No, this is not a good idea. Standard oils will break down long-term and cease serving as a protective barrier against corrosion.

OP, if you're potentially storing this for a year or more pull the pan and spray everything with fogging oil or light oil and seal it up with plastic. Sorry I wasn't clear about this.

Amsoil also makes a fogging oil.
