Installing a longer shock may give you a small amount of extra downtravel, but at the same time will decrease the ability to stuff the tire into the wheel well.

measure your current shocks collapsed and extended length. then go looking around for something longer, but not too long. you could maybe get another 1" in your extended length but thats it.

you might be able to get like 1" lift shocks or something but you dont want to go too big because they might not fit.im not sure what they make for stock sized travel shocks. if you want more flex you could take out your rear sway bar without seriously changing the effects of on road travel. i dont have mine and alot of guys on here take theirs out also. in the front you could do disconnects. this will give you more flex but once you fully extend your stock shocks thats pretty much the best youll get without a lift or longer shocks.

i have been meaning to do away with the rear sway bar just havent been able to find the time. also im not looking for a lift because it will be harder to put 2 babys into a lifted Heep.

I am manly going to be using the jeep for the snow and pulling stuck ricers and other morons out.

what would you guys recomend I do to my jeep to be able to do the above but also keep from putting a lift on it???

if thats the case i wouldnt be worried about your shock travel too much then. my son is 7 months and my xjs 3" with 31's. its not bad at all getting him in and out. if it was like 5 - 6" then yeah it would be tough lol. since the xjs stock sit pretty small if you were to do like a 1" or 2" budget lift you could fit some bigger beefier tires on it, which would help in the snow alot. plus your xj would look much cooler than stock if you really really dont want to lift it then i would just look into some nice 30" tires or something

Your stock travel is determined by the length of the spring, not shock. The shock is designed around the axle travel. It is limited on one end by the bump stop and the other by the length of the spring. To do what you want to do you would have to put a longer softer spring on. This would increase your travel, but also increase your body roll in cornering.

I would suggest the thing to do is to put a 2" or 3" lift with something like the Old Man Emu kit which uses full spring packs and softer springs. It is the best compromise you will get.

My 91 is sitting at on a 6.5 lift with 33s and it is a pain trying to get my 1 year old son in the back seat. Not only the height of the vehicle, but the XJ has such a small rear door opening. As stated above, a 2-3 inch lift with 30 or 31 inch tires should be sufficient if you want to go that route.

its not limited by spring length, its limited by your hard parts as well as shock length. TREs on steering, control arm joints, trackbar, etc. i gained ~2" downtravel by just adding a JKS trackbar way back when I was just on a rusty's 3" kit and no other upgrades.

ok so if i was to do maybe a 1-2 inch lift what am i looking at loosing on the ride quality???
also i dont really want to take away from the stock look of the jeep too much. as weird as it sounds i am thinking about using the jeep as my first resto project. with the only real mods to it being reliablity/safty mods.

also im not the worried about myself putting the kids in it as much as i am the ol ladie shes 5'3" and my 2 year old is a big boy and can do it him self he says and thats all i need is for him to fall trying to get in it

What size tire do you plan on running?
Tire dia. is going to give a good idea of what collapsed length you will be able to deal with.
A collapsed length of 15.7" works great for a 33x10.50... but would be too long to stuff a 30-31" tire. I would think a 33x12.50 would be able to run a shock with longer collapsed length as the tire will not fit inside the wheel well, requiring more bump stop, thus longer collapsed length could be used.
a 14.5" collapsed length works great with 30" tires.

As mentioned above, axle droop is going to be limited by the stock lower shock mount interference with control arms... then stock type track bars (tie rod end at the pitman arm). At some point after that, axle droop will be limited by stock type control arms (short arms) binding.

The shocks you linked, would likely work well with 35-36" tires... but, even if I were given Edlebock shocks I would not run them.

if your saying its hard with 6.5,
wow thats going to suck for my gf to get our baby out of my jeep then, with 8 plus inches of lift with my future 33s or 35s.

Are your rear springs sagging? If they are put on some heavy duty springs from quadratec. maybe a 1 inch front spacer for a small lift or air shocks in the rear.
