Default stereo /dashboard question

My 98 XJ has the stock radio. It's a cassette player with the 2 sliders for treble and bass. I want to replace it but it looks bigger than a standard radio (like double DIN i guess it would be called). I looked at Crutchfield and the only adapter plate they offered was a Jeep universal that would fit from like 84 to 01 for an XJ. I even checked it as a GC to see if they came up with something different. I'm almost positive I already have this universal plate from another XJ and held it up next to the opening and it's definately too small.

Is it a typo with the picture on their part or is there something special I should be looking for? Or better yet, does anyone have another source?

thanks

Use a dash kit for any Chrysler product built in the last 15 years.

Thanks

So it probably is a typo in their picture. It's not like it's going to break the bank if it's the wrong one anyway, but I hate getting psyched for a project and find out I have the wrong stuff.

Thanks again

97-01 XJs use a DIN and a half sized heat unit, 96 and older XJs use a DIN sized unit.

Ahhhh....that's what I was looking for. The plate I have is from a 91 so that totally makes sense to me. Now lets hope it makes sense to them too :-)

thanks

So does that mean ANY chrysler, jeep radio, from those years, will fit a 98 opening? Even the ones with CD players?

I don't know about every chrysler, but a lot of dodges are the same. My 97 only had the cassette and I switched out for a cassette/cd out of an 01 XJ

My 98 Cherokee and my 97 Dodge Ram 1500 have the identical same CD-cassette DIN-and-a-half unit. There are very very few aftermarket 1-1/2 DIN units, so if you're going to replace it you'll most likely end up with a 1-DIN unit and an adapter.

Almost all of the Chrysler radios will work in 97 and later XJs, But I think the infinity radio will not because of the infinity amps and extra wiring needed.

After a bunch of research, I picked the Metra 99-6000 bezel.

It's got a little jewel case holder where the extra 1/2 a DIN goes. I'll be installing tomorrow and let you know how it went in.
